Just checking in for the first time and saying 'hi' to everyone.

I'm a scientist (originally a biologist), a Chartered Environmentalist, and these days a freelance environmental consultant, based in Somerset.

I've been in the business of helping other businesses deal with environmental issues for 20 years, and was a keen and bright (if amateur) green for a long time before that, so I hope to be able to contribute usefully.

But first let me catch up on the posts so far...

Welcome

Hope you can add rigour where it is needed - and point us in new directions where that would help

The biggest impact businesses can have is undoubtedly on energy - which issue I see is on a sister forum. There is still huge scope for energy savings and energy efficiency in the business world, AND the payback on investment is usually quick and you're soon making real savings. A true win-win.

The second issue everyone thinks of is waste, but that's a little trickier than energy. Yes of course reuse, recycle etc. But ideally you should go beyond that and rethink how you go about your business, and make more fundamental changes - investing in new and inherently less wasteful processes, for example.

Beyond that gets even harder, but we must try. We need to reorganise society almost, so that for example folk don't have to commute miles to work by car - they should either live next door or better still work from home.

Someone in one of the posts asks is it worth the effort? Yes of course it is. If we all do what we can that'd solve the problems. The key word is ALL, so let's try and get everyone on board.
