![]() Topic: Are Light Bulbs Enough?Posted: 23 Feb 2007 at 1:38am |

I am getting increasingly cross by the coverage of climate change by the media.
While it is great that the debate has moved on and that there is effectively no discussion about IF anymore - there is an implicit assumption that if we make a few adjustments to our lifestyle, then we can carry on as usual. It might cost a bit more, but hey! And that we have 50 years to deal with the problem. This surely is not an option. The scale and pace of change required means that we have to make rapid and deep changes in how we travel, consume, work etc. We can't do it by just turning down the thermostat, changing some light bulbs, buying a few more local vegetables and offsetting our holiday flights. We are arriving at a low carbon future whether we like it our not. Oil depletion and population growth will see to that, apart from climate change. So the quicker we learn (or re-learn) how to live without relying on carbon based fuels and fertilisers, the better. Or am I just being a doomster? |
